Ghana National Council of Chicago Welcomes (Akwaaba)The Diaspora to “The Year of the Return” at the 31st Annual GhanaFest™ in Washington Park
(Chicago, IL) –The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC) and its Affiliates present the 31st Annual GhanaFest™ in Chicago, IL, July 26-28 2019.
Friday, July 26, begins the weekend with a town hall meeting organized by the Ghana Ministry of Information. Later that evening, Ghana’s premier highlife artist popularly referred to as “Iron Boy”, “the Highlife Maestro”, and “Abrantie” Amakye Dede will be performing live for the Pre-GhanaFest™ concert, brought in collaboration with IBright Events, Steaman Entertainment, and GNC. Then for the first time in 18 years — on Saturday and Sunday July 27th -28th Washington Park will transform into a special two day festival to celebrate the largest cultural display of Ghanaian traditions, food, fashion, art and music in the Midwest.
This City of Chicago supported event attracts over 5,000 people each year to get the true experience of Ghana. GhanaFest™ will comprise of various attractions and activities such a vendors selling goods in African clothing, decor, art, jewelry, shea butter, hair products, and much, much more. The food court will exemplify an array of authentic, delicious, Ghanaian and Vegan dishes from vendors for guests to enjoy. Then Chicago appointed Ghanaian Chiefs and Queenmothers of various tribes will give a spectacular celebration march in the Royal Parade with original tribal cultural performances. The Ghana Village Kid’s Zone will host various activities for children of all ages including a bouncy house, dance competition, youth artist performances, face painting, learning games that focuses on the culture, and the Ghana-lympics.
Headlining the GhanaFest™ is Ghanaian reggae and dance hall recording artist from Wa, Ghana, known as Samini. His genre of music is a melodious mixture of highlife, dance hall, reggae, and hip-hop which he terms as the “African dance hall”. Ben Brako has been added to the lineup to deliver a performance that will give you the harmonious feels of Ghana. Brako is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern highlife and is indeed one of the forefathers of the popular Ghanaian cultural music. He is credited with bringing highlife music into the modern age while enlightening the attention of the educated and westernized youth.
Live music will be provided around the clock by Ghamaci (Ghana Music Union), Chicago Djs, and other great local musicians. Minister Bernice Acheampong (Jane & Bernice fame), Minister Sussie Okyere. (Sussie & Matt fame) Herty Winner, Minister K. Boateng, and Saint Joe are gospel artists that will perform throughout the festival.
This year our theme is “Akwaaba”, which means “welcome back in the Ghanaian-Akan language know as Twi. The president of Ghana Nana Akufor-Addo has declared Ghana 2019 as the “Year of Return”. This year holds special importance as Ghana pays homage to our enslaved ancestors and encourages people of the diaspora to come and emerce themselves in the Ghanaian culture. GNC’s mission is to continue spreading and promoting the history & culture of Ghana, while continuing to include all nationalities to help bring peace and unity to our beautiful city, Chicago and our motherland Ghana.
