Augustin Sidy Diallo has passed away after testing positive for coronavirus. The president of the Ivorian Football Federation (had not accompanied the group during the two qualifying matches for CAN 2022 against Madagascar during the international break. He did not appear to show any worrying signs, however, his condition deteriorated and he was forced to be hospitalized for respiratory complications.
A great sense of shock and loss has fallen over the Ivory Coast since the news broke on Saturday.
It was through his leadership that the Elephants obtained their title of African champion in 2015. Patrice Beaumelle, the coach, was particularly moved at the announcement of this terrible news. “I had eaten with him a few days ago and he was in great shape. He came with us in October to Belgium too. He was very positive. I even got it on the phone when I got back from Madagascar (November 17th) and it was going very well. We had to see each other because I had told him that I had to come not far from his place. It’s a terrible moment, he was a great guy who deserved to be known. A man of heart who adored football”
Plans for his burial are yet to be announced
