THIS JUST IN TO DNT – The former president of the Republic of Niger Mamadou Baba Tandja has died yesterday at age 82 after a short illness, the government announced.
The death occurred at a hospital in the capital of Niamey where he was undergoing treatment. The Nigerien government has announced a three-day national mourning for the fallen leader.
Tandja was elected in 1999 and was re-elected to serve a second term that took him through 2010. However, he attempted to overstay his term and go for a third term when he was overthrown.
