The Rugby World Cup 2023 will be hosted by France, with kickoff on Friday, September 8, 2023. The final will be played on Saturday, October 28, 2023.
All eyes are on current champions, South Africa’s Springbok rugby team, and whether they can defend their hard-won 2019 Rugby world cup title with a back-to-back win. New Zealand’s All Blacks is the only team to succeed with back-to-back wins in 2011 and 2015. Here’s holding thumbs for the Springboks to do the same!
The following matches in the Rugby World Cup (RWC) pool phase that could determine who qualifies for the playoffs. Four of them are on the opening weekend. They are France vs New Zealand on September 8, England vs Argentina on September 9, and South Africa vs Scotland: September 10.
The rest of the games will take place in the following week.
New Zealand and South Africa are the most successful rugby teams, with three Rugby World Cup titles each. Australia’s Wallabies has two and England has two – the only other teams to lift the Webb Ellis Cup.
Namibia is the only other African team at the Rugby World Cup 2023.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa has urged the South African Broadcasting Corporation to reach agreement with pay channel MNet’s SuperSport, to secure sub-licensing of broadcast rights to the 2023 Rugby World Cup, for all South Africans to be able to view the matches.
